Highlander Institute envisions an equitable educational system that supports all students while preparing them for success in our rapidly changing world.  We cultivate and disseminate innovative strategies that improve educator and system capacity to provide personalized, student-centered experiences to every learner. A nonprofit organization based in Providence, Highlander Institute has become the leading state provider of technical assistance and professional development related to personalized and blended learning models. Currently, the Institute team works with ninety schools and districts across nine states, spanning urban, suburban, charter and district environments.

The content of our professional learning services fall into two buckets. The first focuses on personalized instructional practices at the classroom level. We define personalization as actions that improve the student experience, and focus on four domains of practices across classroom culture; student identity, interest, and agency; differentiation; and rigor and mastery. We support teachers across all grade levels and content areas, and also support instructional models that combine practices across domains, such as project-based learning, SEL, deeper learning, station rotation, etc.

Our second bucket of services focuses on school change. Over the past 25 years, few of the many initiatives implemented across Rhode Island have achieved sustainability and scale. Our approach to change challenges traditional top-down, solution-oriented, one-size-fits-all reform initiatives by empowering local stakeholders and emphasizing systems that promote local voice, ongoing improvement cycles, and multiple pathways. Taken together, our two levels of service codify and spread innovative classroom practices that operationalize the vision and priorities set by a design team.
