The Segue Institute for Learning is an independent charter school in Central Falls, RI, currently reconfiguring its enrollment to include Central Falls students in grades three through eight. A key component of the mission of the Segue Institute for Learning is to foster a community where students take ownership of their education, receiving a rigorous academic experience that prepares them to excel in the high school and eventual college setting of their choice.
In service of this mission, Segue’s faculty designs a rigorous curriculum that provides all necessary supports to ensure student success. Supports for Segue’s English learners (Els), or emergent bilingual students, is a strength of Segue’s academic program. The collaborative lesson-tuning protocol (referred to as the Tuning Protocol) is Segue’s internal method of delivering ongoing, educator-driven professional learning in the area of supporting ELs. The success of this practice led to the creation of the Segue’s Professional Learning Institute (PLI), a group of educators motivated to bring this high-quality professional learning experience to their colleagues in schools across the state.
